Setting Point Values on Questions

This article will walk through how to assign different point values to different types of questions in the itembank.

Single-Part, Single Score Question

Examples include simple multiple-choice, multi-select, drag and drop, etc.

When creating a question in the itembank, the question will have a default point value of zero.

  1. Start by entering the question stem and the correct answer.
  2. Note the default value of 1 for a correct answer. You can also hit the + next to correct to give additional acceptable responses and their corresponding point values.
  3. Point Value (pre-save): this value will always start at 0 for a question.
  4. Once you are finished entering the question stem, answer, and correct answer value, click the Place Element button at the top right of the page.
  5. Point Value (post-save): the value will update to the value you entered in the "Correct" box from step 2.
  6. Scoring Type Options will determine the final point value a student will be given for their response:
    1. Per Part:  If this is a single-part question, the single correct score will be recorded.  If this is a multi-part question, the system will score each individual part and the sum will be the final score on the question.
    2. Rubric Basic:  This option will override the "Correct" box value and require the teacher to manually score the question on the rubric scale provided.  This is a simple rubric where you provide a maximum possible score.  (i.e., entering a 4 in the box below means you can manually give a student a score of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 on their response.)
    3. Rubric Advanced:  This option allows the user to select an advanced rubric to score this question and will require manual scoring by the teacher. Click here for more information on how to create an advanced rubric.
    4. No Score:  Allows the students to answer, but their score will not count towards their total assessment score.
  7. Once finished, click the Save button or the Save and Exit button.

Multi-Part Question

Examples include a combination of multiple-choice, multi-select, drag and drop, etc.
  1. The steps to build a multi-part question are the same as above, except a second part is added below the first by clicking on the + sign.  Each question will have its own value for a "correct" answer.
  2. Once Place Element is clicked, the Point Value will be the sum of the correct point value of each part of the question.
  3. Scoring Type Options will determine the final point value a student will be given for their response:
    1. Per Part: If this is a single-part question, the single correct score will be recorded.  If this is a multi-part question, the system will score each individual part and the sum will be the final score on the question.
    2. All or Nothing: All parts of the question must be answered correctly by the student for the student to receive the maximum point value total on this question.  Students will not receive any partial credit.
    3. Dependent or EBSR: The student must answer the first part of the question correctly in order to receive credit for any additional parts of the question, no matter if the additional parts are correct or not.
    4. Rubric Basic: This option will override the "Correct" box value and require the teacher to manually score the item on the rubric scale provided.  This is a simple rubric where you provide a maximum possible score.  (i.e., entering a 4 in the box below means you can manually give a student a score of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 on their response.
    5. Rubric Advanced: This option allows the user to select an advanced rubric to score this question and will require manual scoring by the teacher. Click here for more information on how to create an advanced rubric.
    6. No Score: Allows the students to answer, but their score will not count towards their total assessment score.
  4. Once finished, click on the Save button or the Save and Exit button.
