Using a Locked Browser (Safe Exam Browser)

This page will talk about enabled a locked browser for Windows, MacOS and iOS devices.

Safe Exam Browser (SEB) creates a secure testing environment for assessments.  SEB opens a web browser window without navigation tools and locks the computer into a kiosk mode, which prevents students from switching to other applications or quitting SEB and Classify Learning without permission. SEB will need to be installed on both the teacher device and the individual student devices.

Click here to install the Safe Exam Browser.

Teacher Locked Browser Set Up

To enable SEB for an assessment administration, go to the specific administration settings. Check the box to Enable Locked Browsing. Once checked, you will need to enter an unlock/exit password. This will allow the students to exit, if necessary, but only with the password that you set ahead of time.

Student Locked Browser Usage

When a student navigates to the assessment, they will see a different window from the traditional assessment window. Students can be directed to download SEB from here on their own device if it's not already installed. When ready, the students should click on Launch Locked Browser.

One thing to note, the download and install section is dynamic depending on the device and operating system your student is using. We do have support for Windows, iOS and Chromebooks as well. However, Chromebooks do require an additional step with your IT team.

The assessment will launch in a separate SEB window. The new SEB window does not have any of the usual navigation controls. The student will not be able to use anything on the computer outside of the Classify Learning assessment. The students should click the Start Assessment button or the Continue Assessment button to access the test.

Once the student is ready to exit the assessment,

  1. Click the Exit icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  2. Enter the password in the pop-up window
  3. Click OK.
